Through out our life, we are proven time and time again, the significance of the role that our Mentor / Mentors play in our life.
In our infancy, it is primarily our parents or caregiver who play this vital role. This is then further complimented during our childhood years and beyond by our teachers, peer group, colleagues at office, acquaintances and friends.
A Mentor’s wisdom can enlighten your well being and help you dream bigger, aim higher or even enhance the harmony that you derive from your life. Everyone’s life would have an unimaginable powerful impact if they had a Mentor.
What are prerequisites of a Mentor?
Belief in the Mentee –
From my association with these special individuals, I’ve observed that a true Mentor is someone who believes in your potential and has faith in you.
The joy the Mentor experiences in the growth of the Mentee is an example of positivism at its best.
Maggi, a friend’s teenage daughter, had disliked her English class due to the cruel taunts she used to receive from her contemptuous teacher on just how poor a student she was in English. Moving school the following year, she was thrilled to get an English teacher who not only believed in her talent in English but motivated her to the extent that Maggi topped her class that year. The English teacher not just saw the potential in Maggi but helped her to overcome her challenges and excel.
Respect for the Mentee’s individuality and personality –
The Mentor gives more importance to listening to what the Mentee has to say than generously offering advice all the time
Allows You to Grow –
A Mentor would ask you to ask yourself why you cannot reach out for the stars! Nurturing your potential and enjoying watching you grow and excel is one of the critical aims of the Mentor.
Gives you the Courage to Step Outside the Comfort zone –
One of my inspiring Mentors, Shridhar Sampath not only motivated me to step outside my comfort zone during our brainstorming speech preparation sessions but also through the process, motivated me to have a bolder perspective about my life too. His advice to me as I faced challenges was profound – I need to be confident and comfortable about the step I make in the quest for further improvement.
The impact of a Mentor is that while you may receive guidance and support in one specific area, the positive learning you experience affects your entire life.
The sincerity of a true mentor is unquestionable – that is what makes mentoring a selfless role. The basis of the relationship a Mentor has with the Mentee is pure altruism – to provide the best support for the Mentee’s improvement and growth.
Excellent Time Management Skills –
A Mentor is a wonderful person you can learn time management skills from. As we all know, we have all enough and more things to do in day but a Mentor is someone who makes time for us. It is valuable personal time that is being put aside for our benefit and growth.
The Empathy Giver –
The odds or the hurdles of the Mentee, either imagined or otherwise is not made light of, on the contrary, the Mentee always receives the understanding and patience of the Mentor during moments of hesitation or doubt. Another wonderful Mentor of mine, Lakhi Sawlani, empathized with the soft voice with which I used give my speeches during my early years as a Toastmaster. He continuously motivated me to enhance my voice for better clarity and depth.
The Key to Growth –
Mentors possess the key to ideas for solutions and opportunities. Ideas relating to that area of your life they are helping you out with. It is a key that you not just use to open up the possibilities of improving your life but also help others improve theirs as well.
In all our lives, we all would have chanced upon people who would have guided us with their knowledge and wisdom. Our first Mentors, our Parents or Caregivers and the all other wonderful Mentors in our life have through their support conveyed to us the integrity and nobility of this role.
A Mentor is one who expects nothing in return but our growth and who instills in us the strength, confidence and compassion to become a Mentor in future, to help others grow and succeed.
