The attainment of knowledge is a passion for those seeking awareness and enlightenment.
When we look at well being, it is a beautiful combination of tranquility, harmony and state of contentment. So, how do we link well being to knowledge?
Recently in my Toastmaster Club, we had a sizzling debate on the topic –
“Most of formal education is a waste of time”
The learning opportunity for the debate participants was not merely based through their arguments on the stance they had to take, but get an insight into what education can mean in our lives.
The experiences of joyfully sparring with the group made me also reflect just how much we rely on intellectual stimulation for our well being.
Many seek to enhance the quality of life through the utilization of the creative and literary pursuits in producing works that seek to promote the joy in diversity and find a scholarly sense of peace amidst erudite works of knowledge.
A week ago, I had the opportunity to speak to an academician, Kris Iyer. I refer to him as an academician, due to his intellectual comprehension of the world, be it politics, science, languages, literature and human behavior. Recently, he and his friends had brought forth an online magazine, “Beyond Borders”. It is an innovative attempt in bridging literary and artistic genres without emphasizing on cultural and regional diversity. With a kaleidoscope of articles, poems, painting and photographs, their magazine is a treasure trove of flickering ideas and creative thought provoking contributions by writers, poets, artists and photographers.
As a literary material, it’s focus is in enhancing our living pleasure. How?
By giving us a gist of how vibrant our world is and how the myriad shades of life seen from the perspective of different people from different cultural backgrounds and nations can be source of pleasure to a reader.
From an educational perspective, continuous learning enables you to face the challenge of learning something new and unknown. Along with physical exercise, mental exercise is crucial for our overall health and well-being. This fact is not just incredible from the impact of knowledge on our health and well-being, it is also acknowledging that learning positively enhances our life in all possible ways.
Let us consider some of the areas of our life that our attainment of knowledge enhances:
Knowledge enables us to apply and make conscientious and desirable changes in our existence, including the way we relate to people and environment.
The understanding we experience through the process of learning enables us to have higher regard for our self respect and dignity along with that for others.
The more we learn and acquire wisdom, the more we identify with the goodness that we see in others.
Our ability to communicate with others also from how successfully we relate to them. This is possible only if we are tolerant of their culture and their personalities. Knowledge helps us become better individuals, at a personal level or at the grass root level.
Its acquisition enables us to have the thirst for more knowledge and this spurs our our innate creativity.
Knowledge encourages us to have a more positive attitude to people and knowing them.
Happiness and Challenges are part of life. Our desire to continuous learn and acquire knowledge helps us to be better equipped to cope and handle challenges that may come our way. We are also urged into a state of mind that recognizes that difficulties and issues can appear in anyone’s life and that its also what being part of society entails.
It is a realization that when there is so much to learn, what is the significance we give to self importance or arrogance in our life?
The last line in Robert Frost’s memorable poem, ” Stopping By Woods On a Snowy Evening” eloquently summarizes the infinite role knowledge plays in our life…..
“…..And miles to go before I sleep”
Seeking knowledge is a life long journey that enhances our perception and appreciation of life. It enhances the celebration that we call “life”.
