Power – Creating Harmony (Part-3)

We all have the intrinsic desire to be treated well. The key to effectively use our authority and power is by realizing that we need to treat people the way we wish to be treated.

Whether we are an employer, an employee, a homemaker, a sibling who is regularly assisting another sibling with their responsibilities and duties, a grandparent guiding the grandchild with lessons learnt from life, we are incorporating some of the core leadership traits into the activity we are involved in, eg: Sincerity and Confidence. With our participation and initiative, each of us reflect our relationship with society by cooperating, learning and leading one another in our own way.

Any matter that discusses the impact of power cannot be complete without considering leadership and the impact of a leader.

For many, there lies an assumption that they are only leaders if the respective designation is presented to them.

Why wait for a designation to be given to us when we can do what we can? We can all have a sense of responsibility, commitment and loyalty to whatever we do – like a leader. Through our efforts, however small they may appear to us, we can empower and inspire others to follow what we believe and practice.

A recent newspaper report on the altruistic initiative of a Mother of two, reflects how power and authority can compliment the harmony of our existence and that of others. Like many Mothers, Sabina Arulraj noticed how her children seemed to grow out of their uniforms in no time. With the uniforms looking as good as new, it was disheartening for her to merely dispose of them. Sabina soon got an idea to collect uniforms from the parents of her children’s school and send it to poor children in villages in India. To her joy, her initiative was a resounding success, with parents from other schools and well wishers too contributing to this noble cause. Her initiative eventually resulted in the collection of 250 kilograms of uniforms. Thus, many impoverished and needy children benefited from the initiative of this enterprising lady.

Sabina’s initiative is a reflection of true leadership – taking the plunge into a task that she believed in. By working hard, she motivated many into working for the cause and making it a success. A leader needs to confident, decisive, be able to effectively set goals and have a plan to successfully achieve it. Leaders also need to be individuals who have effective communication skills, are trustworthy and show others on how a task needs to approached and accomplished.

The implementation of our responsibilities in a day regarding our personal and private lives call for leadership skills. Being in power or having authority would mean that we would need to focus on the well being of our team or individual who follows our instruction or guidance. Some of core skills of a leader are – be positive, show integrity, confidence, possess effective communication skills, be honest, humble, be willing to learn, motivate and empower the team.

From the few mentioned above, I consider the skill of being positive as one of the most critical ones. Seldom given as much respect as the other skills, the effectiveness of the leader is deeply influenced by just how positive the person is. It is not merely optimism but having a positive healthy attitude towards life – both personal and professional.

Being in power and accomplishing our duties is highly dependent on the negativity we associate with. Do we associate with negative people or thoughts? Both are toxic and bring in undesirable negative thoughts that are detrimental to growth and development.

Being positive helps us to be more proactive and supportive with our team. It also enables us to be more alert to face challenges.

Having the authority or being in power is in reality a responsibility more than anything else. A responsibility that makes the leader duty bound to perform the role with respect, conscientious zeal and an eye for excellence.

Our awareness of respect needs to be enhanced as we possess the power to lead or instruct people. What is power if we were to exploit people for our own needs and desires?

Authority gives us the moral obligation to continuously learn, improve, motivate and bring out the best in people.

The exuberance that those in authority project is highly contagious and inspiring. Any call to action would not be as effective as when the leader decides to take the first step in activating it.

Each of us have the power to help and empower others as we grow.

What lies in the hearts of those who exploit power is simply fear. An acute sense of fear that arises from from the irrational belief of losing what they see as their infinite “control” over others.

Like how lack of confidence is one of the fundamental reasons for rudeness, fear plays havoc with our ability to be rational and be courteous.

One of the ways to celebrate our existence is by acknowledging the power each of us possess. With power comes the formidable responsibility to improve our life and that of others with respect and consideration.
