One of the incidents that was thought provoking regarding the power of legacy was my conversation with Ravi several years ago.
A soft spoken, sensible and dignified young man. Ravi worked as Papa’s (my husband’s Father) chauffeur. To my question regarding long term future job aspiration, he replied with joy.
“I love working for Raghunath Sir”, he said, his eyes lighting up with a smile. “He is very kind, thoughtful and caring …I would not want to work for anybody or anywhere else”
Here was a clear example of the power of kindness and of course the significance of providing a positive working environment for employee satisfaction.Encouragement, generosity, compassion are all qualities that have the power to not just inspire but that will leave an imprint in the hearts of those who receive them.
Today, dear Papa is no more, but Ravi continues to light his own journey through life by lighting the life of others. He continues the legacy that Papa left behind, a legacy that is based on good will, kindness, encouragement and values.
The strength of the legacy that we leave behind depends on the intensity of the goodness, our behavior and actions have conveyed.
Another step towards creating a meaningful legacy for others to emulate and continue is through empowerment.
By empowering others, they undergo a process of education, enlightenment, personal and professional growth. This instills in them the value of being socially responsible and the awareness that they need to carry forth this noble deed of empowering others too.
When Janet started her new job, she was really concerned. She had joined a firm that was still in infancy. Having no job experience, she found the monumental task of supporting the organization and managing the communication with clients highly challenging. But her boss, Samuel was a leader who believed in the importance of empowering his team. With steady patience, he coached, trained and mentored Janet on the acquisition of organizational skills. Skills that would help her work effectively to make their fledgling company grow. Over the next two years, along with their company’s growth, Janet ability as an effective administrative assistant also grew. She started getting recognition due to her efficiency in ensuring that the office operates successfully at all times. So much so, that a high profile client of their company offered Janet a fantastic job in their organization.
Not surprisingly, Janet was perplexed regarding the choice she needed to make. Samuel, however, was delighted for her and immediately insisted she takes up the new job. There was no way his company could give the fantastic offer and perks the other company was offering at this stage. With a thoughtful farewell dinner, Samuel gave a memorable send off to Janet.
Today, through her hard work and commitment, Janet continues to grow. Her growth is also enriched by the empowering experience she had working with Samuel. An empowerment that she will take forth and make a difference in people she will come across. Samuel’s legacy thus continues due to the positive difference, radiance and strength his actions had made to one individual’s life.
Each one of us can work on our strengths and help others grow. If we carefully look around us, we will notice that helping others grow as we grow is a lot easier than we may think. Through the experience of working in a positive environment, Ravi and Janet not only immensely enjoyed their job but became much better human beings, thanks to the positive learning they had experienced with Papa and Samuel.
This way, while the Legacy we leave behind may not necessarily bring us fame, we would have made a positive difference in the life or lives of those we come across. A positive difference that happened due to the learning they experienced with us.
A wonderful learning that they will want to share with others they come across, thereby leading to the continuation of a Legacy.
