Just what makes Anne Frank’s work continue to inspire generation after generation?
For a work that was compiled during a period of a little more than two years, it is an amazing work that focused on hope and optimism. What made her diary more inspiring was the fact that while living in hiding, she had the gift to articulate her observations, emotions, and the spirit to live with clarity and purpose.
She also conveyed the simple honesty of a young girl through a cheerful account of her existence. Her style of narration could appeal to any reader, regardless of the fact they are a teenager or an elderly individual. Her account of her hopes and desires for the future was also portrayed from a perspective of puberty and the concerns that accompany it.
Her work carried none of the pessimism of the harsh reality that Anne and her family lived in. In other words, she wrote about the hopes and dreams that had universal appeal.
Most importantly, her writing would have given Anne a great solace during the traumatic period that she lived in.
Writing is a creative expression that stimulates and intellectualizes your thoughts. It also has the power to motivate you into development and progress.
I began to scribble my thoughts when I was about 10. Initially, it was just my thoughts; then it was a pretentious effort in writing poetry. I call it pretentious efforts, because other than an amusing attempt to sound like the poets I admire, they had no soul of their own.
They neither expressed what I felt or what I thought, other than my desire to be like others who could. My English teacher in 9th grade who had kind regards for me, after perusing through my poems, told me gently but honestly, “Seetha, write about what you feel, be yourself”.
Years later, after a particularly traumatic phase in my life, I took up writing again. However, this time, I was writing what I felt. I did not ponder for a moment whether I wish to share my thoughts with the rest of the world, it paves the way for was irrelevant to me. I neither attempted to write like anyone I know nor did I want to do so.
After a month or two, I began to feel elated at the thought of expressing myself through my writing. The more I wrote, the more I was keen to express without hesitation and without inhibition.
Indulging in writing is undeniably healing and paves way for understanding ourselves better. It is also deeply cathartic. We are expressing our deepest thoughts and unexpressed feelings through writing.
We are not discussing the virtues of writing therapy here but merely writing in a diary or writing articles or even poetry. Writing therapy relies on a great extent on exercises, supervision, analysis of situations or occurrences in a person’s life and expressing the feelings relating to them.
Just like artistic pursuits like painting and learning to play an instrument, writing undeniably heals the writer and has the power to inspire the reader through the strength of the wisdom conveyed.
Begin with the want to write and express, followed by the willingness to reflect and express the insights you have gained from life experiences and other learnings in life.
This is followed by selecting a subject that allows your mind to tune yourself to any matter that concerns you or that you feel wonderful about. The more we explore our thoughts, the more we would be motivated to express and share through our writing.
The first step in embarking on writing would be to express through free writing. I’ve found this exercise extremely liberating and positive.
Free writing is when you just write whatever comes to your mind. Some thoughts and concerns may be noticed during the first few seconds and sometimes it takes a few sessions to get a glimpse of what you wish to express.
The first step is to BEGIN and begin with determination and intent. Your writing is for you and perhaps much later should you wish to share with the world, you could, but that’s your choice.
You never know who will be inspired by your experiences and words. If none are, you can still feel happy, because you know your writing has helped you to lead a happier life.
